Pharos at Alexandria
Built as a lighthouse by Ptolemy the II of Egypt in about 280 BC and
reputedly for Alexander the Great, the building was the tallest of ancient
times and could be seen twenty-five miles out to sea. A series of mirrors
made from polished bronze reflected the sun's ray by day and flames by night.
